Therapy for Rygin King
RYGIN King will be releasing a 10-song album titled Therapy on September 9. He is confident that he remains ‘Dancehall’s Baddest Ting’ after a life-threatening incident two years ago.
“This album is not just physical but mental therapy. I have not been around no one an’ mi mek this album, mi do everything miself, engineer di tracks, write di songs, ah me alone. This album is just Rygin Chap Records,” said Rygin King.
The set includes Wake Me Up, Circumstances, Broken, and the lead track, Therapy which will be released on August 5.
“Di one called Wake Me Up is di exact story of what happen to mi. God bless mi with a talent dat is so remarkable dat mi can describe di picture of how it unfolded. An’ I have another one called Broken, great, great track. Broken is about how dem try break mi spirit,” Rygin King explained.
He deliberately planned the album’s release for September.
“This is di time when people normally return to school after di summer, so dis date represents a return to business, a therapy session to send everyone off with a good energy for a new programme,” the artiste said.
The deejay revealed that he hopes to one day walk again after escaping death’s door. He was shot three times by gunmen in Struie district, Westmoreland, on June 28, 2020.
“Mi ah do actual therapy ya now, it tek a time before mi even coulda start. Mi ah look forward to walk again bredda an’ mi do believe dat miracle ah go happen but ah just di conscious part of it, di positive thinking dat keeps me going; all di days of my life, I am just a positive person,” he said.
Rygin King (real name Matthew Smith) returned to work late last year, knowing that he is the main breadwinner for his family. He was still in hospital when he began to voice songs again.
“Mi voice not even deh deh dem time deh, di shot enter mi back, touch mi spine an’ puncture mi lungs, mi couldn’t breathe good, but mi still voice because ah di determination, knowing dat ah this alone mi have an’ dat mi do to mek a living…mi have to push on, mi youths dem dey round mi an’ dem haffi eat, bredda,” the 25 year-old said.
Rygin King continues to churn out hits such as 7 Fall Many Rise, which has racked up eight million YouTube views so far. Singles like Draco, Complicated and Who You Doing Like That? have also done well.
Rygin King is a proven hitmaker with songs like Tuff and How Me Grow. He recorded two of his biggest sellers (No Emotions and Glu) just weeks before he was injured in the gun attack.
Rygin King did a series of major operations, the last procedure dealing with repairs to his lungs in 2020. Since that time, he has been in isolation.
“Mi forward home an’ mi very paranoid, mi don’t know who fi trust since mi get back,” he said.
