Cop kills mentally challenged man in Duhaney Park
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A man believed to be of unsound mind was shot and killed by a policeman at the Duhaney Park Plaza in St Andrew on Friday afternoon.
Details of the incident are still unclear but information reaching OBSERVER ONLINE is that the man was shot dead during an altercation with the cop. There is a strong detachment of police personnel at the scene.
It is not known what triggered the incident, which happened a stone throw away from the Duhaney Park Police Station.
Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Constabulary Communication Unit (CCU), the information arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, confirmed the incident.
“I don’t have all the details but I know it involves a police and somebody who is mentally ill, but I don’t have all the details just yet,” SSP Lindsay revealed. She said she is awaiting more information.
Hamish Campbell, deputy commissioner of the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) also confirmed that there was an incident but said he is also awaiting further details.
“At the moment they are still there, they are still down at the scene so I have not got the official report,” Campbell said. “What you’ve got so far isn’t different from what we heard, our investigators are still down there.”
