Has this been our greatest achievement?
Dear Editor,
The recent RJR/Gleaner poll has revealed that, in the opinion of most Jamaicans, sporting activities have topped the achievements of our people since Independence. The achievements of our athletes in the three most recent competitions — World Athletics Championships, Eugene, Oregon; Commonwealth Games, Birmingham, England; and World Athletics Junior Under-20 Championships, Cali, Colombia — strongly support the findings.
This is a remarkable achievement and a wonderful present for Jamaica’s 60th anniversary.
The most pleasing thing to me, though, is the performance of the youngsters in Cali, Colombia, where they were second to the great USA by just one medal, and their achievements included two games records and one world record, thereby proclaiming to the world that there will be continuity in the future. More power to them.
