Retired teacher gunned down in St Mary
ST MARY, Jamaica – A 69-year-old retired educator was shot and killed in Gayle, St Mary on Monday.
He has been identified as Dennis Edwards, otherwise called ‘Mattar’ or ‘Mr Mattar’, who was also a businessman.
OBSERVER ONLINE understands that at about 1:15 pm, Edwards was walking along a section of the Gayle main road when he was pounced upon by gunmen who opened fire, hitting him.
He was assisted to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A motive for the killing has not yet been established.
Edwards taught for several years as a physical education teacher at the Tacky High School in the parish.
His death has rocked the usually quiet rural community.
“Gone but not forgotten!! May your soul rest in peace, my teacher and friend Dennis Edwards. Mattar, I pray these coward, selfish, cruel hoodlums who took your life in broad daylight in Gayle, St Mary will be rewarded soon. No sin goes unpunished,” said one woman on social media.
“RIP Mr Mattar. My condolences to the family and friends,” wrote another woman on Facebook.
“Dennis Edwards… you were known for your connection to sports… You beamed with pride when the cricket team was playing… after all they were your ‘past students’… Fly high Mr Mattar,” shared another woman.
