KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is set to appear before the Cabinet on Monday, September 12, to make a presentation on “long-standing issues” concerning the supply of electricity to the nation.

In a statement on Wednesday (September 7), it was revealed that JPS is expected to brief the Cabinet plans and measures that are in place to ensure power stability as the hurricane season progresses.

JPS is also expected to highlight how and when issues concerning delays in adding new customers to the grid, persistent and unscheduled power outages, and relocation of poles will be addressed, as well as actions to compensate citizens who may have suffered damage or loss of income due to long and or unplanned power outages.

Additionally, the utility company is expected to provide a supply chain assessment report on the impact of the challenges being encountered by the company on the construction industry.

On Friday, September 2, Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Daryl Vaz, expressed dissatisfaction at the JPS management with its handling of unannounced and extended power outage, which affects communities, small businesses and residents.

He also noted that the JPS have not yet provided a hurricane response plan, which was requested two months ago.
