Welcome to Part 2.

We will be looking at Doc’s sister’s garden. I will refer to her as Prof.

As you enter the carport you are welcomed by two very large trailing Boston ferns, which she has had for over 20 years. Prof’s style for her inner front garden is based on “less is more” which speaks volumes in this garden. The flowerbed under the kitchen window is lined with peace lilies (spathiphyllums — sensation) with breathtaking large white blooms! Tucked away in the corner of that bed is a jasmine shrub which is shooting up as it was recently pruned. As the jasmine grows it will trail onto the supports and form a canopy for that corner. Prof advised that when the jasmine is in bloom, its aromatic perfume-like fragrance engulfs the garden and kitchen. In the opposite corner a philodendron (self-heading) climbs onto the support nearby and a large bowl of orange impatiens adds a burst of colour. The exotic blooms of three semi-shade vandas beckon the eyes up to the overhead support from which they hang. Prof also advised that the view from her kitchen window is stunning and relaxing.

Prof has accentuated her garden with art pieces done by renowned Jamaican artists. One of which, by the artist Kay Sullivan, belonged to her parents, of blessed memory, which was in their koi pond and is now strategically placed on the edge of the bed containing the spathiphyllums. The other is a wall driftwood piece with smooth white pebbles by the artist and photographer Donnette Zacca.

Like her brother, Doc,Prof enjoys watching the birds feed and listening to their cheerful chirps, which explains the many bird feeders randomly placed throughout her back garden. The focal point of Prof’s back garden is a large terracotta pot of sun vandas surrounded by grass-like variegated liriope and colourful annuals.

A cluster of areca palms forms a canopy for her bromeliads and other shade-loving plants, including red begonias (Angel/Dragon wing), impatiens, ferns and anthuriums. Sun-loving plants include duranta gold edge, alternanthera, yesterday today and tomorrow (Brunfelsia pauciflora), just to name a few.
