SAVANNA- LA- MAR, Westmoreland — Despite dropping points for the first time this season in the 0-0 draw against neighbours Godfrey Stewart High on Tuesday, second-round qualifiers Manning’s School will seek to get back to winning ways in their ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup game against Belmont High on Friday.

Manning’s School had their hot start brought to a halt after six wins but were among the first schools to secure a place in the second round with three games still to be played.

Up to Tuesday, Manning’s School had scored 24 goals but managed just a point against Godfrey Stewart High who they had beaten 3-1 in the first round.

The point saw Manning’s School inch up to 19 points and is assured of at least finishing second in Zone D and taking one of the two automatic spots.

The Everton Tomlinson-coached Manning’s School had beaten Belmont Academy 2-0 in the first round and will start favourites on Friday.

Petersfield High are in second place on 12 points and will face Godfrey Stewart, who are three points behind, on Saturday, in what will be a crucial game for both schools.

Petersfield High have ‘cooled off’ since winning their first three games, and have drawn their last three, while scoring one goal, in a 1-1 draw against Belmont Academy, recently.

A win for 2005 champions Godfrey Stewart would throw the race for the second spot wide open.

Meanwhile, in Zone A, on Tuesday, Cornwall College snapped their two-game losing skid with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Green Pond High, avenging their first-round loss and pulled to within a point of second place.

Cornwall College have never lost at Green Pond High and on Tuesday, Deshaun Talbert gave Cornwall College the lead from the penalty spot, while Braxton Richards scored his fourth of the season to double the lead at half-time.

Green Pond pulled one back late in the game when Devoe Douglas halved the deficit in the 80th minute.

It was Cornwall College’s first successful penalty of the season after they missed their previous two while 2-1 down late in games against Green Pond and Irwin High, respectively.

Cornwall have lost three games in the first round since 2013, the last time they had failed to get out of the first round of the competition.
