Third time lucky for Paul Bogle in D’Cup

ST THOMAS, Jamaica – It was third time lucky for Paul Bogle High School when they booked a spot in the second round of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after beating Morant Bay High 3-2 in their Zone L first round return leg game on Monday.

The win saw Paul Bogle High improve to 21 points and with a game to play, needs only a draw to win the zone after they finished last in the last season.

After winning their first six games and were a point away from advancing for the first time since the 2018 season, Paul Bogle High lost back-to-back games but got it right on Monday.

Also confirming their second round places on Monday were former champions Rusea’s High and Frome Technical as well as Ben Francis KO holders Edwin Allen.

Twelve schools have now confirmed their place in the next round including William Knibb Memorial, Cedric Titus, Manning’s School, St Elizabeth Technical, Clarendon College, York Castle, Dinthill Technical and McGrath High also made progress.

Rusea’s High’s 2-0 win over Green Island in their rescheduled game in Lucea, took them to 18 points, same as Frome Technical who has played one game less.

The result knocked Green Island out of contention for an automatic spot as the two former champions advance.

Edwin Allen High beat Kellits High 4-1 in their Zone H game and improved to 14 points and will accompany Clarendon College as the automatic qualifiers.

Yallahs High edged St Thomas Technical 2-1 and moved into second place with 17 points with one game to go in Zone L while Seaforth High are on 15 points with two games to play.

Brown’s Town High edged just ahead of Oracabessa on goal-difference, both on 11 points for the second spot from Zone I after contrasting results on Monday.

Brown’s Town beat Marcus Garvey Technical 2-0 while Oracabessa High were beaten by York Castle by the same margin.

Brown’s Town must avoid losing their final game to Ocho Rios by more than two goals to retain their place.

Meanwhile Zone C qualifiers William Knibb Memorial and Cedric Titus both lost their perfect win records after playing out a 0-0 draw in Clarks Town.

Manchester High reclaimed the lead in Zone F with a big 8-0 thrashing of May Day High as previous leaders Belair High were upset 1-0 by deCarteret College who passed them for second place on goal-difference, both on 18 points.
