WATCH: Gov’t to partner with Jamaica Post to make NIDS enrolment easier
Floyd Green, Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, on Tuesday declared that significant steps are being taken to make enrolment for the National Identification System (NIDS) through a collaborative effort with the Jamaica Post.
Green made the announcement at the post-cabinet press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister.
NIDS is a digital, central, and foundational identification database used to verify identity, backed by biometric information that links an individual to the system.
“One of the things we decided to do was utilise already existing government resources to have a sort of ‘win-win‘ scenario regarding our enrolment centres for the National Identification System,” said Green.
He added: “So instead of building new enrolment centres, we are partnering with Jamaica Post and telecoms.”
The minister was quick to establish that this decision would reinvigorate the use of post offices as Jamaicans outgrew the idea of physical mail.
Green also announced that the Central Sorting Office, the first enrolment centre, has been completed and upgraded to facilitate the processes linked with NIDS.
“The post office at the Central Sorting Office now has a brand new customer service hall which will be launched tomorrow and now has access to high-speed internet and we are working to automate some of their services.“
Green also detailed plans to open other enrolment centres and firmly established that the roll-out of the NIDS program is completely on track.
