Grey delights in great start to Premier League campaign
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Devroy Grey was the hero for Waterhouse FC as the former Jamaica Premier League (JPL) champions got their season off to a winning start on Sunday.
Playing in the feature match at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, Waterhouse had Grey to thank for their come from behind 2-1 win over Molynes United who had taken the lead with less than 15 minutes played in the match.
However, Grey smashed a 15-minute brace in the second half to rescue the points for his team and give them the platform they would have desired in their pursuit of the title.
He could hardly hide his delight after being named man of the match, not only for his goals but his overall play for his team.
“It’s actually a great feeling. I’ve just been working on the training pitch right throughout the week,” he said.
Grey also revealed that he had been a doubt to start leading up to the game and was only included in the 11 the day before the match.
“Unfortunately, I was a doubt for the game, but I just put in the work (and) on Saturday morning coach gave me the heads up and I came here and produced.”
The team had been working out the kinks leading up to the game and Grey was happy with the team’s response to going behind early in the contest.
“We have been working on it in training coming up in the week. There was a little shakiness, but the team is a very experienced team and today we showed that we have character and that we can deliver.”
Both of his goals were from assists from Damion Binns and Grey related that it is a partnership and a friendship that is bearing fruit.
“Binns is one of my closest friends in the team. We actually travel back and forth together for training. I keep on telling him just put it in the right position and I will find it and that’s what we did today,” he said with a smile.
Executing things practiced on the training ground has also brought joy to the left footed player who joined the club from Tivoli Gardens at the start of last season.
“It’s a good feeling to do what I do on the training pitch and do it on a match day so it’s a good feeling. It’s a great win for the team and we look forward to the next one.”
Grey also revealed that the half time team talk delivered by coach Marcel Gayle wasn’t very complicated.
“It wasn’t a lot, it was just keep on doing what you are doing because we actually gifted them a goal, so we weren’t actually doing much wrong so must have patience and the goals will come.
“It was a game plan by the coach to sit off a bit let them come at us and then we work, but in the first half we kept turning over the ball, but in the second half we actually fixed it, and we got a victory out of it,” he said.
Waterhouse will travel to Montego Bay United for their second game of the season next week Monday.
