Eyes on the prize
MONTEGO BAY, St James — William Knibb Memorial High and Cornwall College could both secure places in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup football competition on Friday, when Group 2 of the round of 16 is completed.
William Knibb Memorial edged Cornwall College 1-0 at Drax Hall on Tuesday to take control of Group 2 with six points, while Cornwall College and Dinthill Technical are tied on three points each. Paul Bogle High, the other team in the group, have lost both games played so far.
On Friday, William Knibb Memorial will play Dinthill Technical at Drax Hall where even a loss by less than two goals would still see them advancing, while Cornwall College will host Paul Bogle in a game they have to win to be certain of making progress.
A draw could work for Cornwall College but their qualification would then depend on the results from Drax Hall as a win by Dinthill Technical could see all three teams finishing on six points.
Two other western Jamaica-based schools, Manning’s School and Frome Technical High, are also poised to advance to the top eight teams from their respective zones which will be completed on Saturday.
At Drax Hall on Tuesday, the prolific Mark Lewis’s first-half goal separated the teams as William Knibb extended their run of games without conceding a goal to 12, winning 10 of them.
It was also the third-straight game that William Knibb were winning by a 1-0 margin as Cornwall College crashed to their sixth loss in the season, all by one goal margins.
Cornwall College, who have had two narrow escapes from being eliminated, had opened the round of 16 games with an upset 2-1 win over Dinthill Technical also at Drax Hall.
Only the top two teams from the four groups will advance to the quarter-finals of the competition, while the other two teams will contest the Ben Francis Knockout competition.
