MEMBER of Parliament for St Mary Central Dr Morais Guy is calling for the National Works Agency (NWA) to reactivate mobile weigh stations to rein in operators of overladen trucks who destroy roads as they traverse the constituency.

Dr Guy, who was making his contribution to the State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, said while there are no sand mining operations in the constituency, the roads are being negatively impacted by heavy loads being carried from these operations by trucks traversing the constituency to as far as Negril.

“[I am] not only [concerned about] the overweight but the constant spilling of some of the load on to the roadways creates hazards for the other motorists. Many have suffered broken windscreen from flying missiles from these trucks and spillage can also contribute to skidding of vehicles on the loose stones on the road,” he said.

Dr Guy also proposed that the Government introduces a levy of 10 per cent of the cost per tonne of aggregate sold to these trucks to be paid to offset maintenance costs of the roads in the constituencies.

“The nearest location to me sells about 150,000 tonnes per year. The cost of aggregate range between $2,500 to $3,000 per tonne, which could give about $45 million per year to assist in maintaining the roads,” he said.
