Drama as daCosta Cup champions booted
Defending champions Garvey Maceo High and title contenders Glenmuir High were both knocked out of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition on a dramatic final day of the Round of 16 on Saturday.
Dark horses Manchester High and Edwin Allen forced their way into the final eight as last season’s beaten finalists Manning’s School completed the round of eight.
Saturday’s qualifiers will join Central High, Dinthill Technical, William Knibb Memorial, Clarendon College and Frome Technical for the quarterfinals that are set to kick off on Wednesday.
Edwin Allen High made up for losing their opening game in the round by handing Glenmuir High their first loss of the season with a 2-0 win with goals from central defender Kimolar Fearon who was scoring in back to back games and Alwayne Bryan.
Both Clarendon schools ended with four points and zero goal-difference but Edwin Allen who had drawn 1-1 against STETHS in mid week had three goals to Glenmuir High’s two for and joined Mannings School who won the group with seven points.
All three goals at Llandilo came in the second half as Shamar Hamilton gave Manning’s the lead in the 55th minute and Jhamaleek Porter doubled the advantage in the 67th minute before Antwon Smith pulled one back for STETHS in the 81st minute.
Manchester High got the point they needed to knock out Garvey Maceo as they finished with five points and a plus one goal-difference, the same as Central High but topped Group 1 with more goals, four to Central High’s three.
Malachi Douglas gave Clarendon College the lead over Frome Technical when he scored in the 34th minute and they had to wait until the 57th minute when Christopher Hull got the second before Devonti Hodges scored from a free kick in time added on.
It was the first loss of the season for Frome Technical but they had booked their spot after winning their first two games against York Castle High and Rusea’s High.
Results from Saturday’s games:
Clarendon College 3, Frome 0
Rusea’s High 1, York Castle 2
Manning’s 2, STETHS 1
Edwin Allen 2, Glenmuir 0
Garvey Maceo 1, Manchester 1
