World Cup 2022: Takeaways from Matchday 13

Day 13 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 brought more upsets to close out the group stage of the tournament. South Korea stunned Portugal 2-1 to punch their tickets to the round of 16, while Cameroon etched their names in history by defeating football giant Brazil.

Plenty can be highlighted from the matches on the day. Here are some takeaways for our OBSERVER ONLINE readers.

1. Suarez, Uruguay World Cup hopes dashed

Uruguay were booted from the World Cup despite their 2-0 win over Ghana. The South Americans accomplished their mission of beating the African side but South Korea’s upset of Portugal meant that the Asians beat them out for the runner-up spot behind the European group H winners. Suarez finished the match on the bench in tears as news came of South Korea’s last-minute victory. This is the first time since 2002 that the Sky Blues have been eliminated in the group stages.

2. Wasteful Ghana

As late as the last few minutes before the final whistle, Ghana had several goal scoring opportunities against Uruguay. But the Black Stars failed to capitalise. Their first opportunity came in the first half by way of an André Ayew penalty, but the winger’s shot was saved by Uruguay goalie Sergio Rochet. Subsequently, they lost the match 2-0.

3. In the nick of time

South Korea captain Son Heung-min provided the 91st minute assist to Hwang Hee-chan, which gave the Asian side a sensational stoppage time goal to beat Portugal 2-1 for a place in the round of 16. South Korea’s first goal was courtesy of Kim Young-gwon in the 27th minute. The Taegeuk Warriors will go on to face Brazil in the knockout stage.

4. Indomitable Lions create history

Cameroon exited the World Cup on a high after a late strike by captain Vincent Aboubakar gave the African team a victory against Brazil. The Indomitable Lions made history as the first African nation to beat Brazil in a World Cup match.
