Chaka Demus & Pliers hit platinum in New Zealand with She Don’t Let Nobody
When he and Chaka Demus recorded the song She Don’t Let Nobody at the Aquarius Recording Studio in Half Way Tree one night in 1993, Pliers had no idea that the song would have become the hit that it became.
“Mi try to do the song the best way that I could. Mi never really did a expect it woulda reach that big,” Pliers told Observer Online on Thursday.
Last week, She Don’t Let Nobody was certified platinum in New Zealand. It is the latest certification for the song, which was previously certified silver in the United Kingdom.
She Don’t Let Nobody is a cover of American soul singer and songwriter Curtis Mayfield’s 1981 hit song, which Mayfield took to #15 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart. It was the first single from his 1982 album Love is the Place.
“Growing up, I always loved that song and when we were signed to Island Records, I suggested to Sly (producer of the song, Sly Dunbar) that I would like to do a version of the song for our album,” Pliers recalled.
She Don’t Let Nobody was among seven hit songs that Chaka Demus & Pliers charted on the UK Singles chart between 1993-1997. The song rose to #4 on the chart and also made it to #9 in Ireland, #17 in the Netherlands, #20 in New Zealand and #19 in France.
The song is a joint production among Sly and Robbie, Lloyd “Gitsy” Willis and Trish Farrell of Island Records.
Chaka Demus & Pliers were signed to Island Records’ subsidiary, Mango Records.
Pliers said the success of the song further established the duo’s presence on the international scene.
“It impacted our lives in a very positive way. We toured the world and it is a song that is included in our catalogue that the fans love. Those were good times,” said Pliers.
