When Elaine Grant-Bryan settled in Atlanta in 1990, that city was long acknowledged as the mecca of black empowerment in the United States. She joined a growing Jamaican community which has made an impact in commerce and community politics.

Grant-Bryan has been Jamaica’s honorary consul to Atlanta since 2018. Currently in her third term, she has been awarded the Order of Distinction (Officer class) by the Jamaican government for service to the diaspora.

That award will be presented during the National Honours and Awards ceremony on October 19 at King’s House in Kingston.

In an interview with Observer Online, Grant-Bryan spoke of being “deeply humbled” by recognition of her work. Like New York City and South Florida, she said Jamaicans have made their mark in Atlanta and neighbouring areas such as Decatur and Stone Mountain.

“This region has grown significantly, especially after COVID-19 as Jamaicans moved from colder regions in the United States in great numbers. Our community has doubled, and many have successfully assimilated in the Georgia culture and made significant contributions to Jamaica and this region,” Grant-Bryan stated.

An educator and real estate broker, she points to initiatives started with her husband Gregory as major achievements of her tenure. These include the Elaine Bryan Foundation which drives the Jamaican Pioneer Programme and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics).

The pioneer programme allows Americans of Jamaican heritage to gain citizenship in their family’s homeland. Once that is secured, they increase their contribution to Jamaica’s education system by mentoring and assisting needy students.

STEAM is an enrichment curriculum she developed with her husband, a programmer and Information Technology expert. It teaches coding/programming and offers career assessments, internships, entrepreneurships, and scholarships to Jamaican students completing degrees in STEAM fields.

Empowerment was a buzz word in Elaine Bryan’s home in Kingston, where she was born to a father who was an engineer and her mother, a nurse. A past student of Excelsior and Kingston Technical high schools, she was head girl at the latter.

Staying true to her profession, education is the thrust of upcoming projects by the Elaine Bryan Foundation.

“We will continue to include additional students who are completing degrees in the STEAM fields in Jamaica. The projection for 2026-7 is to extend mentorship programmes in Jamaica, study abroad and exchange programmes,” she disclosed.
