A plea for automatic expungement of marijuana records
Dear Editor,
The Daily Wire recently reported that ‘Nearly 43,000 marijuana records automatically cleared in connecticut, days before first adult-use sales start’.
With these progressive moves occurring internationally, I respectfully move that Parliament consider a measure to automatically expunge the records of all citizens who were covincted of marijuana offences that are no longer criminalised.
Many individuals have been convicted of marijuana offences that are no longer considered criminal acts due to changes in laws and societal attitudes towards marijuana.
These individuals continue to carry the burden of a criminal record despite the fact that their conduct is no longer considered a crime. This can have a significant impact on their ability to find employment, housing, and access other opportunities and rights.
Automatically expunging the records of these individuals would serve the interests of justice and fairness and would allow them to move on with their lives without the burden of a criminal record.
Therefore, I respectfully request that Parliament consider a measure to automatically expunge the records of all citizens who were charged with marijuana offences that are no longer criminalised.
