My husband who had worked at a housing finance company died on January 23, 2004 at the age of 76. A few weeks after his death I went to the NIS [National Insurance Scheme] office [New Kingston] and filled out the forms for the funeral grant and pension benefits. I also handed in his NIS card, death certificate, and our marriage certificate.

I cannot recall the name of the officer who guided me on the procedure to apply for the benefits. However, after several telephone calls, I was promised that I would be contacted. However, up to now, December 4, 2022, I am yet to receive a call from the NIS or the benefits.

Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Tell Claudienne has been in communication with NIS in respect of your concerns and notes that they have phoned you. In the telephone conversation the NIS informed you that you were not eligible for a pension.

You told the column that the NIS has promised to send you a letter by mail detailing the reasons you were ineligible for a pension. If they do not send you the letter, please let us know so that we can follow up the matter.
