Digicel participating in global digital consultations
PARKINSON... this a very rare chance and an important opportunity for us to bring together the diverse experiences of the region with regard to expanding connectivity

Digicel participating in global digital consultations

JAMAICAN telecoms giant Digicel is participating in the United Nations (UN) Global Digital Compact Consultations that opens in Mexico City, Mexico, on Wednesday.

Conceptualised by the UN secretary general’s envoy on technology, the two-day Global Digital Compact focuses on expanding connectivity, promoting digital inclusion, and protecting human rights online. It is also designed to find meaningful ways to accelerate progress on the adoption of digital technologies for human development and sustainability.

Digicel Jamaica’s Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs Elon Parkinson has joined the expert-driven confab of leading stakeholders from government, private sector, civil society, the technical community, and academia across the world, who are outlining shared principles for an open, free and secure digital future for all.

“This a very rare chance and an important opportunity for us to bring together the diverse experiences of the region with regard to expanding connectivity, the use of digital to contribute to our unique sustainable development goals, enhancing digital rights, — all while understanding the particular challenges of the countries of the region,” a company release quotes Parkinson.

“The ideas exchanged in these consultations will also help us to garner consensus throughout the global community about the digital principles and priorities that matter to us. We look forward to the tangible and sustainable ways of implementing our ideas when the results are presented to the United Nations later this year,” Parkinson said.

In addition to the Mexico round of consultations for the Americas, the UN will host similar events in Kenya and India for the African and Asian regions, respectively.
