Dancehall artiste Silk Boss has signed to Atlanta-based Platinum Camp Records.

According to the label’s CEO, Mr Biggs, he started to consider working with the artiste last year after the entertainer encountered an unfortunate incident that went viral on social media.

“A partner of mine, YG, came to me and showed me a video online of Silk Boss being abused; tied up and kidnapped. It touched my heart to see someone that was in distress, knowing that he’s an artiste and human being; he even could’ve been my son.

“What they did to him was not cool. We are all humans. It’s not nice. They violated his basic human rights. YG communicated with me that he had a number for Bree. We reached out; she was super nice and professional. After a few banters, we signed a non-exclusive digital distribution deal and co-partnership deal,” he said.

With almost 20 years in the game, the CEO, whose given name is Luke-Solomon Saint Axum, has worked with several artistes such as Barrington Levy, Konshens and Foxy Brown.

Noting that he carefully hand-picks entertainers for his label that meet a specific criteria, Mr Biggs said he is looking to grow Silk Boss’s career.

“I look for the art, I look for talent…The art form is dying because there are all kinds of clowns in the business because of the Internet and social media. Everyone is an artiste, and that’s what that does; it drowns out the real artistes because there’s too much noise. So, we have to look for quality and Platinum Camp is about quality control. Quality is the key that we always represent and what we always stand behind. When every company signs everyone else, we go after the crème de la crème…” he explained.

Silk Boss (real name Rohan Romeo Reid) honed his musical skills on the church choir. He is best known for singles such as Surgery, Sorry and Mankind. The deejay is one of the latest in a long line of dancehall acts out of St James.

The head of Platinum Records told the Jamaica Observer that he cares about the whole development of his artistes.

“There’s too much negativity in the air and we need love. We already got the money for Platinum Camp. Money is always good and, yes, of course, to make money. What we need to do is to look at the positive side, and now that Silk Boss is a proud father to a beautiful baby girl, he needs to earn money for his family and take care of his family, and be a strong black man for his family.

“In this world, the family is divided and I’m proud of him that he’s sticking beside his fiancée. So, we’re looking to support that financially, because here at Platinum Camp we are family,” Mr Biggs explained.

Made official in February 2023, the artiste will continue to work side by side with his fiancée Bree while the label handles distribution and marketing.

On the horizon are several major projects for Silk Boss, starting with a feature on a remix of international R&B singer Bobby V’s single Come Over.

Plans are underway for the official release of the track as well as the accompanying video.
