Irwin Academy wins fourth straight in Sandals U-17 football
ST JAMES, Jamaica— Irwin Academy won their fourth straight game in the St James Football Association Sandals Resorts International Under-17 on Saturday, beating St James High 2-1 in their game played at Irwin High.
It was the first time Irwin High were conceding a goal as they improved to 12 points, two more than Athletes in Action (AIA) who beat St James Academy 3-1 in the first game of the double header.
Montego Bay Boys Club scored their first win after two losses, beating Green Pond 3-1 while Granville United got by Montego Bay United 1-0.
Detroy Reid scored for the fourth straight game when he made the score 2-0 in the 53rd minute after Kevin Wright had given Irwin Academy the lead in the 18th minute.
Javaughn Freeburn pulled a goal back for St James High in the 80th minute, ending Irwin Academy’s 320 minutes without conceding a goal.
Reid took his tally on the season to seven goals, the most by any player.
AIA, who were held 1-1 by St James High the previous week, rebounded with a 3-1 win with goals from Michael Balfour in the 21st minute, Raheem Lee in the 30th as they led 2-0 at half time before Romario Collins made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute.
Rory Smith scored a consolation goal for St James Academy, in the 73rd minute, his third of the season.
Boys Club who lost their first two games by 1-0 margins, led 2-0 at half time with goals from Malike Stewart who netted in the ninth and 40th minutes.
Dasshaun Barrett pulled one back for Green Pond in the 75th minute but an own goal in the 80th minute restored Boys Club’s two goals advantage.
