#CariftaGames2023: Asia McKay opens Jamaica’s medal quest at CARIFTA
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Asia McKay won Jamaica’s first gold at the 50th CARIFTA Games in the Under-17 Girls’ high jump with a personal best of 1.73m on Saturday morning’s opening session at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas.
Jamaica won two medals in the first final as Shanniqua Williams took the bronze with 1.65m.
Courtney Williams finished seventh in the Boys Under-20 javelin with a best mark of 43.62m.
Defending champion Delano Kennedy led all eight Jamaicans through to Saturday evening’s four finals in the 400m after winning his heats in the Boys Under-20 in 47.74 seconds but his teammate Jasauna Dennis led the qualifying with 47.44 seconds.
World Under-20 leader Rickiann Russell ran 53.88 seconds and Kacian Powell with 54.75 seconds advanced to the Under-20 Girls final while Jody Ann Daley with 55.41 and Rosealee Gallimore with 56.03 are into the Girls Under-17 finals and Nickecoy Bramwell – 49.81 and Kenrick Sharpe 50.31 made progress in the Boys Under-17 final.
