St Catherine CC, St Mary clash in Senior Cup quarter-finals
THE clash between St Catherine Cricket Club (CC) and visitors St Mary Cricket Association (CA) at Chedwin Park is one of this weekend’s highlights in the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Senior Cup quarter-finals.
St Catherine have been one of the in form teams this season, dominating their preliminary stage group to finish ahead of fellow quarter-finalists The Mico University College.
St Mary were less impressive but still advanced to the last eight, after claiming second in their group behind neighbours St Ann CA.
St Catherine Coach Odean Brown said his team is ready for the clash.
“We have been playing some good, entertaining cricket and the boys are up for it this weekend so we are looking forward to it. We are looking to continue our good run of form, and we have Carlos Brown and Jeavor Royal returning from national duty,” he told the Jamaica Observer on the eve of the two-day match.
“We know that St Mary have some talented youngsters coming through and we are aware of the threat they possess but we have to focus on ourselves and play some aggressive, positive cricket that St Catherine is known to play over the years,” Brown, the former Jamaica leg spinner, added.
St Mary Coach Jefferton Meeks said his team’s batsmen will have to dig deeper if they are to pull off an upset.
“We’ll have to play good cricket in all facets of the game. St Catherine is one of the teams playing really well; they won their group, so in order to go there and beat them we’ll have to play well. Our bowling has been doing well but our batting has not been at its best so we have to improve on that,” he said.
In other quarter-final matches, hosts St Ann are to face Westmoreland CA at Noranda Bauxite in Discovery Bay; Kingston CC battle Mico University at Nelson Oval in east Kingston; and St Elizabeth CA take on the visiting Jamaica Defence Force team at Manley Horne Park.
