Jamaica’s Clunis, Belvit set new hammer throw PBs
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s Nayoka Clunis and Erica Belvit both threw personal bests marks in the women’s hammer throw on Thursday’s first day of the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, USA.
Clunis threw 70.68m for second place and Belvit threw 69.51m for third, both behind American World Championships gold medallist Brooke Andersen, who threw a personal best, world leading and meet record 79.80m to win.
It was a massive improvement for Clunis, the three-time national champion in her first competition of the outdoors. She surpassed her previous lifetime best 67.40m set at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in 2021, by over three metres.
The mark moved Clunis up to the number two spot on the all time Jamaican list behind national record holder Daina Levy’s 71.48m set in 2016, while Belvit, who beat her previous best of 67.66m, is in third place.
It was Belvit’s second lifetime best for the year after she threw 22.44m in the indoor weight throw in February.
