Kingston College (KC) marked its 98th year with a wreath-laying ceremony at the graves of its founder and first headmaster Bishop Percival Gibson, and second principal Douglas Forrest at St Andrew Parish Church cemetery on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

Bishop Gibson died in 1970, while Forrest passed in 1995.

During the ceremony, which took the order of a service conducted by Rev Father Michael Brown, himself a KC old boy, a prayer was offered for “all schools, universities and colleges to be lively centres of sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom”.

The all-boys’ high school was founded on April 16, 1925 with the vision to remedy the social deformity in which poor black boys were allowed to have primary education only.

While the opening ceremony was held on April 16 in the courtyard of the old Rectory on East Street, downtown Kingston, classes began on April 20 with 49 students registered.

Today, KC has more than 1,970 students on two campuses — Melbourne Park on Upper Elleston Road and the larger at North Street.
