Kingston Cricket Club spinner Akim Fraser acknowledged it required a “total team effort” for them to get by St Ann Cricket Association in the Senior Cup semi-finals to book a place in this weekend’s final against St Catherine CC.

Though the two-day match against hosts St Ann at Noranda Bauxite in Discovery Bay ended in an entertaining draw, Kingston progressed because they had crucially secured first-innings honours.

Scores were Kingston 193 and 94; St Ann 167 and 65-6.

“I think it took a total team effort to get through the game against St Ann … every game [this season] we have had different people stepping up with bat or ball. I think that bodes well for us and shows the quality we have throughout the team,” Fraser told the Jamaica Observer.

Batting first on Saturday’s opening day, Kingston had recovered from 66-6 to get close to 200 runs, thanks to Mickayle Riley’s 91 and Derval Green’s quick-fire 32.

Riley, who batted at number six, had a seventh-wicket partnership of 67 with Fraser (21), which proved vital.

Kevaundre Virgo and Orlando Royes grabbed 2-27 and 2-28, respectively.

In reply, St Ann fell short of Kingston’s first-innings score, with Renaldo Ingram, who batted intelligently for 107 not out, the only player to past 10.

Paul Harrison (4-47) and Green (3-48) were the main wicket-takers.

Batting a second time, Kingston could only manage 94 against Christopher Lamont, who captured 5-28.

Needing 121 in 10 overs to pull off an improbable win, St Ann were limited to 65-6 from nine overs when play ended. Green took 3-34.

In the other semi-final, which was affected both days by rain at Chedwin Park, the home team St Catherine progressed to the final, thanks to claiming first-innings advantage against St Elizabeth CA.

Scores were St Elizabeth 96; St Catherine CC 196-4.

Skipper Damian Ebanks (38) top-scored for St Elizabeth after they batted first and were routed for 96 all out.

Elvis O’Connor and all-rounder Oraine Williams took three wickets each for St Catherine.

In reply, St Catherine cruised to 196-4, with Williams (77), Carlos Brown (38), and Peat Salmon (36) making solid contributions against Ebanks (2-49).

Williams suggested it was a disciplined effort from St Catherine.

“In the field we took our chances and we bowled in the right areas. Our bowling unit has been doing the job all season and we’ve been batting really well,” he said.

The Senior Cup final is expected to be staged at Sabina Park from Saturday to Sunday.
