$120-million repairs for roadways damaged by flood rains in St James
The National Works Agency (NWA) says approximately $120 million has been devoted to undertaking major road repairs across the parish of St James.
The funds which were provided through the Government of Jamaica’s Island-wide Repair to Scoured and Damaged Roads Programme will be used to repair roads that were severely undermined by successive flood events.
Community relations officer for the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, in a release on Thursday, revealed that currently twelve critical roadways are being targeted. The roadways represent a mix of parochial and main roads. Among the parochial roads being targeted are Hart Boulevard and the Branch Hall roadway. The main roads from Barnett to Adelphi and from Johns Hall to Springfield are also being targeted under the programme.
The projects, which are at varying stages of completion, involve repairs to the worst affected sections of the targeted corridors. Generally, the projects involve drainage and base improvements, and the resurfacing of the targeted sections of the roadway.
Ricketts said that, over the next six weeks, motorists may experience delays as they traverse these corridors. Motorists are therefore being advised to obey the posted warning signs and instructions of flag persons when traversing these corridors.
