KINGSTON, Jamaica — Since getting his big break in the music industry back in 2009, G Whizz admits that a lot has changed in the entertainment industry. He told OBSERVER ONLINE that although he’s had to adjust to the changing tide on the music scene, one thing will always remain the same for him, and that is the quality music he produces.

For G Whizz, producing a surplus of songs to saturate the music scene is easy but, as one who prides himself on putting his best foot forward, he has chosen to wait until he has a solid body of work before releasing content.

“We got the break in 2009 and since dem time deh, things change a whole heap in terms of technology, how more artiste gets their break in the business, the type of music that is being put out and more. The changes don’t affect me because we never change our style or how we do music,” he said.

“We just know say we affi just adjust with what’s changing in terms of if a new social media come out deh weh we need fi jump on, we do dat to push wi self more or we try fi link up with new deejays on the scene but we nuh change our self or our style. We say quality over quantity always,” he stated.

The entertainer who released his sophomore album last year, said although he has new material in storage, he has chosen to continue promoting the album as he wants the project to germinate in the souls of music lovers who appreciate good songs.

“Music is fast-paced right now. Man a drop singles every two seconds but we not trying to follow the pace of the music. We want to put out quality work weh we can promote for a few years. It’s 16 songs on the album so mi just wah pace dem and make sure we get everything out of it.”

He added: “We just affi stay focus because right now to how the music going, people a accept anything. Any type of song weh make dem laugh and just kinda gimmicky, people quick fi accept that kind of music. But at the end of the day, I know in myself that a few years from now or a few weeks, that’s gonna be very disposable music so we try fi do some solid music weh can get drafted fi even a movie, or a commercial. As mi say, we a do di music wid quality, not quantity.”

Having taken the local entertainment scene by storm over a decade ago with his debut hit single, Life, G Whizz’s career took a backseat to those of new-aged dancehall artistes who flooded the space and took over the spotlight. Despite releasing other notable singles, the entertainer has not enjoyed the scale of popularity he did back in 2009. When asked if the latter concerned him at all, the artiste said he’s seen bigger, more established acts fall into similar circumstances and so he remains undaunted.

“When mi look at the history of music and mi look at how the music industry in Jamaica and the players of the industry in Jamaica treat a lot of artistes that has done a lot of great work in Jamaica, I don’t even put it on my head and say ‘boi look how dem a treat the Whizz’ because mi know say that’s how they treat a lot of great artistes that put out a lot of great work even the veteran artistes dem,” he said. “Mi just a free up mi self and make the music flow and leave everything inna di universe hands, it might nuh work now but it will work later.”

With that said, G Whizz told OBSERVER ONLINE that he doesn’t allow himself to fall prey to the pressures of recreating a hit like Life. Instead, he’s focused on becoming the best version of himself.

“We don’t really try to match what we did before. We had a few popular songs weh do great after Life. Life was not the only hit song. We have On and On, Night or Even Day, di song wid me and D Angel, Bartenders, whole heap a oda song,” he said. “And when mi did a record dem songs deh mi just did record dem like I didn’t have a hit song. Mi just did a focus on the song at the time, mi never did a focus and a say ‘yow dis affi badda dan da one deh.’ But at the same time, we always try to improve on each song and try to make them better and better and improve on the craft each time.”

G Whizz says while he continues to push tracks of his album, he is looking forward to promoting the video for his track with Julian Marley. The latter he said will be released very soon.

“We just finish the video for the collab wid me and Julian Marley so big up Julian every time. It was so great to have one of the Marleys on the album. The video for that song is being edited right now and that’s gonna come out real soon,” he told OBSERVER ONLINE.
