KC on the hunt for new football coach

Many-time former schoolboy football champions Kingston College (KC) have begun the process of interviewing people for the vacant head coach post after the recent resignation of Raymond ”Stampy” Watson.

Watson spent one year as KC head coach after taking over the position from Ludlow Barnard in 2022. This, after Bernard led KC to the urban area Manning Cup in the prior campaign.

Donovan Germain, manager of the Kingston College team, confirmed to the Jamaica Observer that Watson’s resignation was accepted.

“We are interviewing coaches and that is where we are right now,” said Germain. “Stampy resigned and we have to give him credit for his work at KC. He has done yeoman work at KC at a high level of commitment and we have to respect that, and I guess it is now time for him to move on and we also have to respect that,” he said.

He added that Technical Director Andrew Edwards has also resigned.

Germain said 10 people have applied for the job including four individuals based overseas.

“We don’t really have any timeline as to when we will appoint the next coach because we are still interviewing people and so we don’t want to rush anything,” he stated.

“We have an assistant coach that is conducting the training in the meantime until we arrive at the suitable person for the programme here,” Germain pointed out.

He added that the four overseas-based applicants are all former KC students.

“We are pleased with who have applied so far because we have about 10 candidates that have applied and these are well-qualified people both locally and from foreign. We have about four foreigners and they are all KC old boys who have applied for the position,” Germain said.

Under Watson’s leadership last year, KC made it to the final of the all-island Champions Cup and semi-finals of the Manning Cup.

It is speculated that Watson, who is a KC old boy, is set to join the coaching staff at main rivals and defending Manning Cup champions Jamaica College this season. However, efforts to contact Watson proved futile as several calls to his mobile phone went unanswered on Wednesday.
