Mona hold lead going into final day
MONA Preparatory hold a 13-point lead over rivals entering today’s final day of the three-day JISA/Little Ceasars Preparatory Schools Championships at the National Stadium.
Mona, who have been having an excellent championships in the field events, lead the standings with 80.5 points, ahead of Hydel (66), Our Lady of the Angels (55), defending champions Emmanuel Christian Academy and Vaz on 47 each.
They are followed by Sts Peter and Paul (37), Lannaman and St Andrew on 31 each, Knox Junior (24), Wolmer’s (19.5), and Stella Maris (16.5).
However, despite his team’s healthy lead going into today’s final day of the championships Locksely Anderson, coach of Mona, said it is going to be very tough for his team to win the championships because they are not in many finals.
“It is kind of difficult to say that we are going to win because we don’t have enough finalists on Saturday, but we are going out there to do our best,” said Anderson.
“However, we are going to be competitive until the last event and our athletes will be going out there to give it their best shot,” he added.
Joel McKenzie of Wolmer’s sped to a respectable 12.02 seconds to win the boys’ Class One 100m event. McKenzie, who was the favourite to win the event, flew out of the blocks before moving away from his opponents to win the event quite comfortably. Dejuan Ennis from Sts Peter and Paul was second in 12.20, while Kaheil Evans from St Andrew was third in 12.77.
Lannaman’s Mick-Kayla Gardener produced a spirited performance to win the girls’ Class One 100m in 12.93, ahead of Jowanna Pennant from Vaz (13.11) and Kalace Williams from Hydel who was third in 13.29.
Meanwhile, Hydel’s Ruchelle-Lee Lewis won the girls’ Class One high jump with a leap of 1.35m, ahead of Gianna Punancy from St Hugh’s (1.30m) and Arihanna Pottinger from Mona who also cleared 1.30m.
Franchesa Herron captured Hydel’s second victory of the day in the field events when she won the Class Two long jump with a mark of 4.03m.
Maia Campbell from Stella Maris took home the silver with a leap of 3.95m while Alaina Thompson from St Theresa collected the bronze with a mark of 3.81.
