Local Gov’t minister, MPs observing boisterous Westmoreland council meeting
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Local government minister Desmond McKenzie and three Members of Parliament for Westmoreland are now among those in the chambers of the parish’s municipal corporation where pandemonium broke out on Thursday morning.
Daniel Lawrence, who represents Westmoreland Eastern and Westmoreland Western’s Morland Wilson are at the meeting – like McKenzie, Lawrence and Wilson, are members of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). Independent Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central George Wright is also present.

Thursday’s uproar began with a motion moved to remove the deputy Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Danree Delancy of the People’s National Party. This was the latest move in a political squabble that began on Monday with the resignation of three PNP councillors. The latter is said to have weakened the PNP’s hold on the local government authority.

The PNP now has five seats in the municipal corporation and the JLP has four. There are three independents. The deputy mayor’s removal would remove the PNP’s majority.
