WATCH: $170 million project to replace collapsed sewage in downtown Kingston
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The National Water Commission (NWC) was instructed to undertake an urgent replacement of the collapsed sewage mains in downtown Kingston at a cost of approximately $170million.
This announcement was made by Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Senator Matthew Samuda, on Friday during a visit to the affected areas.
“The situation is chronic. There is no nice way to put it. The lines on West Street and Pechon Street have virtually collapsed,” Samuda said.
According to Samuda, the $170 million, along with another $37 million investment into new pumps at the Darling Street lift station, are being installed within seven days.
He said it is expected to significantly improve the situation in the market district. Remediation works will take place along the following streets: Pechon Street, West Street, Matthews Lane, Water Lane and Barry Street, the minister said.
