Reggae Girlz seek first-ever Women’s World Cup victory

BRAZIL could put France on the brink of a Women’s World Cup exit when they meet on Saturday, while Jamaica can create history with a victory when they meet Panama two hours later.

Event # 1 – WCUP W– Brazil vs France – 5:00 am

A thrilling encounter is on the sporting agenda tomorrow, Saturday, July 29, when number eight-ranked Brazil and number five-ranked France square off in Brisbane, with victory vital for the French side following their opening game stalemate with the .

Brazil kicked off their campaign with a comfortable and dominant 4-0 victory over Panama and was the only side to collect maximum points from Group F in the opening round. The win against Panama means Brazil have now won each of their opening eight matches in Women’s World Cup action and have scored a staggering 27 goals during this impressive run, while conceding just a single goal.

Brazil’s 23-year-old Ary Borges became just the fifth different women’s player to score a hat-trick on her World Cup debut, having found the net three times against Panama. A win for Brazil would send them through to the next round with a match to spare, while defeat would mean they would need a result against a Jamaican side that held favourites France to a 0-0 draw in their first match.

France, on the other hand, failed to impress in their opening game against a spirited Reggae Girlz side and were left stunned as they couldn’t find a way through their stubborn defence. The draw against the Jamaicans marked only the second time that France have failed to kick off their Women’s World Cup campaign with a win; however, they have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four opening World Cup matches. A win for France would put them in the driver’s seat for a spot in the knockout rounds, while defeat puts them on the brink of elimination in the first round.

KEY STATS

• Brazil – have scored four goals at the current edition and are yet to concede a goal. Unlike the men’s side, the Brazilian Women have never won a World Cup title, having finished as runners-up in 2007 when beaten 2-0 by Germany in the final.

• France – this will be the third meeting between France and Brazil at the World Cup, the first clash in 2013 ended in a 1-1 draw, while France defeated the Brazilians 2-1 after extra time in the 2019 World Cup at the quarter-final stage.

• Both sides – France are unbeaten in their last two matches against Brazil with their last meeting ending in a 2-1 win for the French back in February 2022. In their last 10 head-to-head meetings France have won five games while the other five have ended in draws.

The betting tip: Brazil win.

Event # 2 W/Cup W – Panama vs Jamaica – 7:30 am

Panama and Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz will go head-to-head in their second Group F game of the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Saturday, July 29. Panama will be hoping to rebound from their 4-0 thrashing by Brazil in their opening game while the Jamaicans will be looking to build on their impressive 0-0 draw against France.

Indeed, the Reggae Girlz provided one of the shocks of opening week at the Women’s World Cup as they defied the odds to hold European giants and number five-ranked France to a 0-0 draw in the opening round. That draw has given the Jamaicans a chance of advancing to the knockout round, and a win over Panama could see them on course for one of the qualifying spots from the group. Indeed, such a result would be nothing less than the Reggae Girlz deserve following their efforts in the opening game as they defended superbly, limiting France to just five shots on target throughout the 90 minutes. That result was a memorable achievement for Jamaica as it was the first point they picked up at the World Cup, after losing all three matches at the tournament four years ago when they made their debut.

Panama will be aware that they could be on their way home if they don’t secure a result, after being put to the sword by Brazil in their opening game. The Panamanians started the game flat, were two goals down in the first half, and never recovered. The loss to Brazil leaves them bottom of the table without a point, and it means they have now lost each of their last three international games without scoring a goal.

KEY STATS

• Panama’s – last three matches have seen them lose 7-0 to Spain, 5-0 to Japan, and 4-0 to Brazil. They have now conceded in 5 of their last 6 matches in all competitions.

• Jamaica’s – last three matches have seen them losing 3-7 to Mexico, beating Morocco 1-0, and drawing 0-0 with France. The Reggae Girlz have won just two of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

• Both sides – have met twice before, with the Reggae Girlz winning on both occasions. The first clash saw Jamaica winning on penalties in 2018, then they won 3-1 again in 2019.

The betting tip: Jamaica W win.
