PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Trinidad and Tobagos’ Foreign and Caribbean Community (Caricom) Minister Dr Amery Browne has announced that Ghanaian Ashanti King, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has accepted the invitation of Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to participate in Emancipation Day celebrations here this year.
The King, who is expected to arrive on Sunday, is scheduled to “be part of a series of events taking him to August 4 when he will leave” the twin island republic, Browne said adding that “the intention is that this royal visit will further strengthen ties that bind the countries – culturally and historically”.
Tutu II will be taken to the Emancipation Village, Queen’s Park Savannah (QPS) for an event when he arrives.
He is also expected to pay courtesy calls on President Christine Kangaloo and Prime Minister Dr Rowley.
The following day, he will be hosted by the Emancipation Support Committee at a trade and investment symposium to bolster trade and investment between Africa and the Caribbean; and later that evening he will be a guest at a dinner at the Diplomatic Centre.
He will also join Prime Minister Rowley in the procession on Emancipation Day, from the Brian Lara Promenade to the QPS and address the gathering after.
Tutu II will tour Tobago as well as a number of cultural sites before departing the country.
