UHWI, the place to be
Dear Editor,
If you have no qualms about being diagnosed in group sessions, or being made to feel like the proverbial guinea pig or, for that matter, how our close cousins are viewed in zoos then the University Hospital of the West Indies is the place to be.
From the Accident and Emergency Department to being placed on Ward 6 on the dreaded bed 13, I spent 10 fascinating days at that institution receiving excellent all-round care from doctors, nurses, orderlies, etc.
From having been admitted in an unconscious condition, through explorative surgery in Emergency, followed by two invasive surgeries, not to mention being bumped from my first surgery schedule by what else, some emergency — after all, this is Jamaica, right? — the staff went beyond duty.
As we head into our 61st year of Independence, of course there are a myriad things that need correcting — crime, education, rural roads, water, and even within health. However, there are nuggets that we should highlight and hold dear.
With the guidance of the Almighty, good neighbour Valrie Simpson and professional post-op care from Nurse Jones, all in sync.
I am getting better.
