Carter admits Girlz were hungry to go deeper in World Cup
AFTER achieving the first target of getting past the first round of the Fifa Women’s World Cup, Jamaica’s Trudi Carter said the mindset of the team was to throw everything into the games and “see what we can do”.
Carter, who was in her second World Cup and was part of the history-making first Jamaican team to get to the knockout stages, said the general consensus was: “Why not get greedy and see how far we can go.”
Carter, who featured in two games and whose corner kick against Panama in the group stages was scored by Allyson Swaby for the Reggae Girlz’ first World Cup win, said even though getting to the round of 16 was a great achievement in itself, the desire was there to go farther.
“We wanted to go further but the goal was to get out of the group. But, you know, it was like: ‘Why not get greedy and go for more?’ But, unfortunately, we fell short — but you still have to be proud.”
She said while the key plan was to get out of the tough group that also included Brazil and France, the realistic goal was to “try to make it out of the group, which we did, and we were hoping that we could make it to the quarter-finals — but, unfortunately, we fell short”.
After a long trip home, which was extended after repair work to the airstrip at Sangsters International Airport on Thursday forced a delay in their arrival, Carter told reporters, “I’m very proud of our team, myself, and the coaching staff, and all of Jamaica of what we have accomplished.”
Conceding she was not at her best at the World Cup, Carter said she still learned a lot.
“You know, I know this World Cup wasn’t my best, you know, but such is life. I know for me we just have to regroup and come again, hopefully, for Olympic qualifiers in September but I’m very happy… for the minutes I played,” she ended.
