JLP takes control of Westmoreland parish council

The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) now has the majority in the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation with Ian Myles and Garfield James crossing the floor at Thursday’s monthly meeting.

Myles and James, along with their colleague Layton McKenzie of the Grange Hill division, who were all PNP representatives, broke ranks with the party to become independent councillors after a fallout from the decision to allow the party’s vice president Ian Hayles to offer himself as a constituency caretaker aspirant despite opposition.

McKenzie remains an independent councillor.

The JLP now has six seats in the municipal corporation, the PNP has five and there is one independent.

Myles was also recently selected as deputy mayor of Savanna-la-Mar following the unseating of councillor for the Bethel Town Division Danree Delancy as the deputy mayor during the regular monthly general meeting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation on July 13.

Delancy’s ousting has been seen as a fallout in the Westmoreland Western constituency.
