Rihanna’s Pon De Replay 2x platinum in UK
Rihanna’s debut single Pon De Replay, released by Def Jam in 2005, has now been certified 2x platinum in the United Kingdom.
The certification for the Brit Certified Award commemorating sales and streaming exceeding 1.2 million units was issued by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) Friday.
Pon De Replay was the first single released from Rihanna’s debut album Music of the Sun. Described as a dance-pop, dancehall and R&B fusion, the song was an instant hit, topping Billboard’s Dance Music Club Play chart. It also went to #1 in Canada, and New Zealand, while topping out at #2 both in the United Kingdom and the United States. It also made the Top Ten in eight other countries.
Pon De Replay won the MTV Video Music Award in Japan in 2006 for Best New Artiste in a Video, while at the Barbados Music Awards, it won for Best Dance Single and Song of the Year.
Dancehall artiste Elephant Man is featured on a remix of the song.
Co-produced by Vada Nobles, Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers, Pon De Replay was previously certified 3x platinum in the United States, 3x gold in Germany, gold in New Zealand, Italy and Sweden and platinum in Denmark and Australia.
