Seven more schools eye d’Cup second round spots
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Former champions Cornwall College, St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Glenmuir High are among seven schools that could book places in the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition on Saturday with 26 games down to be contested.
One school from each of the three zones with mini play-offs could also secure their place in the second round as the race for the spots heats up.
Cornwall College, Irwin High, Cedric Titus High, STETHS, BB Coke, Tacky High and Glenmuir High will advance with wins Saturday.
Garvey Maceo High, one of five schools that have already booked their spot in the semi-final, could also win their zone if they get all three points. The other schools that are already into the next round are Frome Technical and Rusea’s High from Zone B, Morant Bay High from Zone K and Happy Grove High, who have already wrapped up Zone N.
Cornwall College, leaders in Zone A with 17 points and Irwin High who are in second place two points adrift, will both advance with wins over Green Pond High and St James High respectively.
Cornwall College had come from a goal down to beat Green Pond 3-1 in the first round and will face a team coming off their first win of the season after Green Pond beat Maldon High 3-0 on Tuesday.
Irwin High will hope to make up for a 1-1 draw against St James High in the first round as they seek to qualify for the second round for a second straight year.
Glenmuir High will be seeking a second win over last season’s beaten finalists Central High who have battled back from losing their first two games, conceding 10 goals in the process, to be in the thick of the race for a place in the next round.
After losing their first two games, Central High won their next two by a combined 18-0 score and are a point behind second-placed Denbigh High with a game in hand. Glenmuir High will however start favourites to win despite being upset by Old Harbour High last week.
Garvey Maceo, who secured their place in the second round earlier this week and are on 16 points from six games, boasting a six points lead over second placed Vere Technical, will take zone honours if they beat Vere again Saturday. Garvey Maceo had beaten Vere Technical 4-0 in the first round.
In the three zones that are using mini play-offs to decide their qualifiers, Cedric Titus High in Zone C, STETHS in Zone E and Tacky High in Zone I would all advance if they win their games Saturday.
Cedric Titus will face a William Knibb Memorial team hell bent on revenge after their 3-0 win in the first round game was reversed after William Knibb were found to have used an ineligible player.
Cedric Titus are at the top of the table with 19 points and with the points from the first seven games being carried over, three more Saturday would see them through.
William Knibb are however on a roll and, after a late game rally to beat York Castle and snatch the final place in the play-offs, are expected to give Cedric Titus a run for their money.
Both spots from Zone E could be decided Saturday when leaders STETHS on 19 points take on Lacovia High at home while second placed BB Coke on 16 points host Munro College.
Both STETHS and BB Coke had won their first round games against Lacovia High and Munro College.
Tacky High lead Zone I with 17 points and face fourth-placed St Mary High-13 points, A win should be enough for them to advance with Wycliffe Martin High on 14 points facing Horace Clarke High on 13 points.
