Mojito returns to take on rivals in Errol ‘Big Sub’ Subratie Memorial Trophy
Mojito, after a disappointing Classic campaign, returns to take on competitors at the Overnight Allowance level for the eighth staging of the Errol ”Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Trophy, the main attraction on Sunday’s nine-race programme.
The Jamaica Observer‘s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a close look at the 11 entered for the one-mile (1,600m) event and their chances of winning the major share of the $1.25-million purse.
1. SUNSET SILHOUTTE: (4 b f by Northern Giant – Ahwhofah) – Has yet to win at this level from five outings. However, Sunset Silhoutte has been competitive after finishing second three times in close finishes. Sunset Silhoutte is expected to run well once again.
2. THE GOOD WITCH (USA): (6 b m by Tale Of The Cat – Witch Craft) – Has no realistic chance of winning this one.
3. MOJITO: (3 gr c by Savoy Stomp – Fiftyshadesofray) – Entered the Classic series of races as the favourite, having won four straight victories. Mojito was well poised as a prospective Triple Crown winner after winning the 2000 Guineas over one mile on June 4, but the Richard Azan trainee failed to deliver in the next two events in the series. On July 1, Mojito finished eighth in the Jamaica St Leger over 10 furlongs (2,000m) and fourth in the Jamaica Derby over 12 furlongs (2,400m) on August 7. Mojito has been properly prepared for this prize race, and given his class, he should win. Blinkers are turned off.
4. SISTREN TREASURE (USA): (3 b f by Brethren – Katira) – Has been running fairly well in her recent races. Expect Sistren Treasure to be competitive here.
5. HOIST THE MAST: (5 ch m by Blue Pepsi Lodge – Oplulent) – Is not expected to trouble the main principals here.
6. EXCESSIVE FORCE (USA): (6 ch h by Broken Vow – Fevered Kiss) – Last year’s Mouttet Mile winner. Excessive Force has had two runs this season with no results. Excessive Force running at this level is always going to be a strong competitor, even if he isn’t in the finest of form. Excessive Force is now taking orders from trainer Anthony Subratie.
7. POSITIVE ID: (5 b h by Bern Identity – Bubble Gal Bubble) – Has no form to recommend here.
8. CLASSICAL ORB (USA): (5 b g by Orb – Tiz A Masterpiece) – Returns to competitive racing from a 231-day break. Classical Orb is expected to be left behind in this one.
9. BABYLIKE: (4 dkb f by Savoy Stomp – Ladylike) – Hard to fany
10: BIG JULE: (5 b h by Tapizar – Blues In The Grass) – Returns following a 372-day hiatus. Big Jule last ran on October 8, 2022 in the Mark My Word Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m), finishing sixth by more than 53 lengths. While he has some potential, Big Jule will need to run.
11. RANI BANGLA: (4 b f by Savoy Stomp – Palace Gold) – Has won three consecutive races coming into this race. Rani Bangala, at this level and against these runners, is going to find it very hard to keep her streak going here.
