4th annual National Jamaican Jerk Day celebrations on Sunday
Jerk dishes have been a favourite of Jamaicans and Caribbean nationals for decades. The smell of jerk greets you as you venture past any entertainment spot or busy town square, as vendors of jerk pork, chicken or other delicacies ply their wares to fill hungry stomachs.
Not surprisingly, jerk has caught on across the United States within the Caribbean diaspora with several jerk festivals being held annually in places such as Orlando, South Florida, Miami, Chicago and Atlanta among other cities.
This Sunday, jerk loyalists will observe the fourth annual National Jamaican Jerk Day across the United States.
The National Jamaican Jerk Day is more than a culinary experience, it’s a celebration of Jamaica’s proud heritage and rich culture. Jerk, a method of seasoning and grilling foods that originated on the island by the Maroons, has become a global sensation, earning its place as a part of brand Jamaica. It represents the passion, warmth, and distinctive flavours that Jamaica has to offer.
Major brands of jerk seasonings, such as Grace Foods, Walkerswood, and Ocho Rios, play a pivotal role in recognising and celebrating National Jamaican Jerk Day. These brands have become synonymous with jerk cuisine’s authentic flavours and traditions.
“Grace is at the forefront of introducing Jamaican Jerk and Caribbean flavors worldwide, showcasing our unique food culture. We proudly promote Jerk cuisine as a symbol of Jamaica’s rich culinary heritage, inviting all food enthusiasts to celebrate this flavorful masterpiece that has left a global mark.” – Kimberley Lue Lim, Global Category Manager, GraceKennedy Foods disclosed in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
The popularity of jerk cuisine has transcended borders, and non-Jamaican brands have recognised its global appeal. Several of them are now producing their versions of jerk seasoning to cater to the ever-growing demand. It’s a testament to the widespread love for this exquisite Jamaican culinary sensation.
