Get the look: Supreme Freestyle Ponytail

A braid trend we’re loving lately is the sleek braided ponytail!

And patrons at the recent Healthy Hair & Beauty Expo (#HHBE) are fans too. When word got out that the Supreme Hair booth offered complimentary hair styles, several lined up for the popular style. Hairstylist Sabrina Scott was the mastermind behind the looks, and we are forever grateful to her for allowing us to share her tips with Tuesday Style Dryer (TSD) readers.

Scott says the braided ponytail works on all hair textures — transitioning, relaxed or natural hair — just as long as your hair is straightened or blown out prior to styling. Even better, it requires very little upkeep, and is an easy DIY ‘do. So if you can do a simple three-strand plait, then you can do this look. Here’s how:

1: Get a grip

The super-sleek aspect of this style is its magic. So we can’t allow frizz and flyaways to get in the way. Use a rattail comb to create a centre part, and use Eco styling gel to slick hair into a ponytail. Use your fave edge control to lay edges to perfection.

2: See attachments

Take your kanekalon hair and tie them together with the same elastic (recommended: 2 bundles of hair). Then tie your hair and the kanekalon hair together.

3: Braid, braid, braid

Start your braid by mixing your real hair with the kanekalon. Secure end with a black elastic band.

4: Conceal

Add another piece of hair at the beginning of the braid to cover up the base and make the ponytail look as seamless as possible!

5. Keep it sleek

Add mousse and hairspray for a sleek look.

6. Protect your ‘do

Tying your hair down at night is essential for keeping it in tip-top shape. Tie on a silk headscarf to prevent friction using a reliable wrapping method.

Scott’s preferred styling gel for sleek styles is the Eco Olive Oil gel. Made with natural olive oil and protein, the formula moisturises, adds shine and guarantees a superior hold.
