Clarendon College, STETHS, Frome score Round of 16 wins
ST JAMES, Jamaica- Defending champions Clarendon College and two other former winners, St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Frome Technical were winners as the Round of 16 in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition got underway on Saturday.
Clarendon College turned back Mile Gully High 2-0 to extend their perfect win record to 11 games this season and lead Group 1 on goal-difference over STETHS who edged 10-man Cornwall College 3-2 at Jarrett Park.
Despite being forced to make a change in the first 10 minutes because of injury and down to 10 players just before half time, Cornwall College rallied twice to tie up the scores at 2-2 but an 88th minute goal from Donte Campbell saw STETHS take all three points.
D’Andre Hibbert gave STETHS the lead in the 14th minute and they led at half time before Raheem Lee who had replaced the injured Lincoln Cox in the eighth minute drew Cornwall College level in the 53rd minute.
Antwone Smith restored STETHS’ lead in the 77th minute, Cornwall rallied through Dane Buckley in the 80th minute but Campbell headed home from a corner in the 88th minute to decide the points.
Meanwhile, Demar Williams’ 20th minute goal was good enough for Frome Technical to beat Port Antonio High 1-0 at Carder Park.
Manchester High won their 13th consecutive game of the season with a 4-1 win over first time qualifiers Tacky High School at Manchester High.
Happy Grove lost for the first time this season, giving up a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 to BB Coke who took the lead through Jahmaul Wright in the 10th minute.
Happy Grove rallied to lead 2-1 with goals from Oshane Chambers in the 25th minute and Shevon Miller in the 37th minute but Zorek Grant who converted a 56th minute penalty levelled the scores before Devontae Blake scored the winner in the 89th minute.
Dinthill Technical also lost their perfect record after they were held 0-0 by McGrath High who they had beaten twice in the first round while Christiana High outscored William Knibb Memorial 3-2.
