STETHS edge Cornwall College in five-goal thriller
MONTEGO BAY — St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) pounded out a 3-2 win over 10-man Cornwall College in their ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup Round of 16 game at Jarrett Park on Saturday to take a big step towards the quarter-finals.
Despite being forced to make a change in the first 10 minutes because of injury and down to 10 players just before half time, Cornwall College rallied twice to tie up the score at 2-2, but an 88th minute goal from Donte Campbell saw STETHS take all three points.
“We just came for three points and no matter what we came here for the three points,” Omar Wedderburn, the STETHS coach, told the Jamaica Observer after the game.
“We knew it was not going to be easy but we made up our minds and decided whatever it takes to win this game today we gonna to do it and that was it.”
Dr Dean Weatherly, the Cornwall College coach, said his team played well, but he also hailed STETHS. “Well, you have to make some adjustments,” he said after they lost central defender Matthew Wilson who was shown a second yellow card in the 42nd minute.
“It was a very good game. STETHS came at us very well and this is what should be expected because I would have been disappointed if it was otherwise,” Weatherly said. “I think we were unfortunate as we wasted our chances, especially in the first 15 to 20 minutes, but we have to congratulate STETHS on their performance and we have two more games to play.”
D’Andre Hibbert gave STETHS the lead in the 14th minute. They led at half time before Raheem Lee, who had replaced the injured Lincoln Cox in the eighth minute, drew Cornwall College level in the 53rd minute.
Antwone Smith restored STETHS’s lead in the 77th minute. Cornwall rallied through Dane Buckley in the 80th minute, but Campbell headed home from a corner in the 88th minute to decide the points.
Defending champions Clarendon College joined STETHS on three points in Group 1 after a 2-0 win over Mile Gully, extending their perfect win record.
Manchester High also stayed perfect with a 4-1 win over Tacky High as Happy Grove lost for the first time, giving up a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 to BB Coke, while Dinthill Technical High were held 0-0 by McGrath High.
Frome Tech edged Port Antonio High 1-0, while Garvey Maceo and Glenmuir High played out a 1-1 draw, while Christiana High outscored William Knibb Memorial 3-2.
