My Cancer Essentials is a gift shop that helps cancer patients and survivors look and feel their best while outfitting them with the accessories they need during cancer treatment and beyond.

The one-stop cancer shop, curated by cancer survivor Cherane Heron, was conceptualised after a friend of Heron gave her an ugly ‘nightie’ to take to the hospital for a scheduled double mastectomy. “I wanted something that wasn’t so ugly and depressing. I wanted something functional but stylish to take to the hospital. I was not aware that products existed that would make each stage of the journey more comfortable. I didn’t even know what I needed, and when I found out what I needed, they were not readily available in Jamaica. This was April 2020, and I decided then and there to open a store that would provide the softer side of cancer care to persons going through each stage of the journey,” shared Heron.

The store opened three years later on April 23, but celebrating its official launch on October 27, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Heron and her clients firmly believe that My Cancer Essentials brings hope… It’s people believing that they can and will get better.

The friendly staff help patients with wig fittings and headwear consultation. “Each patient is unique, and we have a variety of services that we provide,” explained Heron.

Understanding the trauma associated with hair loss, Heron has partnered with her Village Plaza neighbour Rupunzel Hair Boutique boss Coralee Osbourne to help women find wigs.

Cancer Essentials also provides mastectomy needs for breast cancer patients, such as post-surgical camisoles, bras, and prostheses. There are also breast cancer-themed trinkets, T-shirts, and caps for those committed to supporting the cause throughout the year.

Natural, luxurious and indulgent skincare products are among the stores best sellers, with vitamin-infused make-up an easy runner-up.

“We really see a huge change from when a patient walks through the door and has the My Cancer Essentials experience, and then, as they are leaving, they are drastically changed. Their mood changes. Their body language changes. They’re uplifted. We help to uplift them and help them to go out into the world with a positive self-image,” concluded Heron.
