A double for ‘Baba’
Despite not being in contention for the trainers’ title this season, previous three-time champion conditioner Anthony “Baba” Nunes demonstrated that his barn still produces winners with a notable double on Saturday, November 4, 2023.
Nunes, who sits in second position in the trainers’ standing by some $41 million behind Jason DaCosta, won the sixth race with Wow How and the eighth race with Savvy Girl. Both horses were ridden by Tevin Foster.
Wow How and Savvy Girl won both divisions of a native-bred three-year-olds (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds and upward (maidens) fillies and mares travelling 6 ½ furlongs.
Running in Division One, Wow How (Perfect Curlin – Sarah Barracuda) raced close to the pace in the early exchanges of the race before surrounding rival entering the lane for an easy 3 ¼-length win in a time of 1:20.2 (23.2 x 47.2 x 1:13.1). All For Love (Dane Dawkins) finished second.
In Division Two, Savvy Girl had to work hard for her victory. The three-year-old bay filly was unable to match strides with the early leaders, racing among the backmarkers at the off.
In deep stretch, Savvy Girl made up a lot of ground and got up in time to nip May Sellington (Matthew Bennett) and She’s Myhedgefund (Robert Halledeen) on the wire. Savvy Girl won by a hair in 1:22.2 (23.3 x 47.4 x 1:15.0).
Nunes was saddling his 44th winner for the season.
