Manning Cup: Mona High book spot to semis
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Mona High advanced to the ISSA Manning Cup semi-final round after defeating St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) 2-0 in their Group 1 quarter-final game at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Friday.
Mona began as a squad on a mission with a few dangerous attacks on STATHS’ goal, needing to win the game to confirm their position in the next round.
Robino Gordon scored in the seventh minute, and Denzel McKenzie added a second in the 21st, giving Mona all three points.
STATHS attempted to score goals of their own, but their attackers lacked the will to do so, and they returned home empty-handed. Mona assistant coach Dane Peralto applauded his team’s efforts.
“Well, the expectation didn’t change from we started the season to be honest with you. We have been saying we are title contenders and we are trying to win this cup. That was what we are planning to do,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Phillip Williams, head coach of STATHS, was left disappointed with the result.
“We played some good football coming up to the quarter-final round and unfortunately this is our second shutout. We created some chances and so it very disappointed to see we going out this way,” he said.
Kingston College also advanced on goal difference despite losing their match 1-2 to St Catherine High.
