MONTEGO BAY, St James – A man found himself before the St James Parish Court on Wednesday for allegedly accepting $1.7 million to purchase a vehicle but failing to fulfil his end of the deal.

Thirty-two-year-old Fitzroy Rowe of Grove Mount, Manchester, is facing a charge of obtaining money by means of false pretence. He is being represented by attorney-at-law Sherneika Jackson.

According to court documents, the complainant entered into an agreement with Rowe on December 22, 2022 for Rowe to purchase a 2013 Toyota Noah on his behalf.

The complainant paid Rowe $1.7 million but the vehicle was never delivered. The complainant also requested a refund, which was not forthcoming.

Subsequent attempts to contact Rowe were unsuccessful. However, on the most recent occasion, the complainant received word that Rowe had been arrested.

The court was told that he was arrested in Clarendon for similar offences.

Rowe’s lawyer, Sherneika Jackson, informed the court during a bail application that her client had received the money to purchase the vehicle overseas and that it was at the wharf, but due to a delay in clearance the vehicle was auctioned.

Jackson also informed the court that her client intends to repay the money within two months.

The parties were then sent to mediation, with a probation officer who was present in court, during which they reached an agreement.

Presiding judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley then offered Rowe bail in the amount of $350,000 with up to two sureties. He was also told to report to a specific police station on specific days.

The matter was subsequently set for mention on February 1, 2024 so the complainant may confirm whether he has received a refund or the vehicle.
