Organisers deem MVP training camp a success
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Organisers of last weekend’s first in a series of MVP Track and Field Club’s annual advanced training programme at the Montego Bay Sports Complex described the day as a success and set the stage for what is expected to be an exciting upcoming track and field season.
Over 100 students from 23 schools across the county of Cornwall were taken through drills by World Athletics-certified coaches in six different areas of track and field.
Bruce James, president of MVP TC, said the targets were met.
“The Cornwall leg of the MVP TC advanced training programme, both athletes and coaches learned a lot and are excited at the prospects for the 2024 season based on what they learned,” he said.
The athletes, who were at different levels, from beginners to national junior representatives, were taken through drills and exposed to track and field events such as sprinting, hurdling, middle distance running, throws and jumps.
Athletes from Rhodes Hall and Muschett High topped the awards. Carifta Games gold medallist Rhianna Lewis and her teammate Jodi-Ann Tomlinson of Rhodes Hall High were among the top females, as well as Vernez Nelson of Lacovia High; Daynea Colstock of Green Island High; Kimmarie Whyte of Mannings School, and Tana Shae Gooden of Muschett High.
Muschett High had two of the top boys in Johan Romaldo Smythe and Osmond Holt, Tay-Shawn Barnes of Steer Town Academy, Romaine Campbell of Petersfield High, Adante Morgan of Lacovia High and Davaughn Stevens of Herbert Morrison Technical.
Suzanne Ritchie-Brown of York Castle High was named the top coach of the day.
