18-y-o prison escapee charged with Westmoreland murder
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – An 18-year-old man who reportedly escaped from prison was on Friday charged in connection with a murder which was committed on Grampa Scheme Lane in Georges Plain, Westmoreland last month.
Ian Wright, otherwise called ‘Papa’, from Georges Plain district in the parish has been charged with murder, possession of a prohibited weapon and using a firearm to commit a felony.
Wright is charged for the October 24, 2023, killing of 39-year-old Dwayne Mulai, otherwise called ‘Soujie’, a farmer from Belmont district in Bluefields, Westmoreland.
Reports indicated that around 9:10 pm, Mulai was travelling on his motorcycle with his girlfriend when he was pounced upon by a gunman who shot him in the upper body before fleeing.
Residents summoned the police, who saw Mulai lying on his back with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The girlfriend was not injured.
Wright, who had escaped from Metcalfe Remand Centre while serving an eight-year sentence, was captured by the St Catherine North police on November 8, 2023.
He was charged on a warrant while in custody at the Spanish Town police lock-ups.
